Puntland GU Rainfall Performance of 2025
The Puntland Information Management Center (IMC) has released the GU Rainfall Performance Report for 2025, revealing widespread rainfall deficits and increasing drought stress across the region.
The GU season (April–June 2025) was marked by normal to below-normal rainfall, with 14 out of 30 rain stations recording shortfalls. Districts along the coast, including Caluula, Iskushuban, Banderbayla, and Bossaso, received little to no rain, continuing the drought conditions experienced in Deyr 2024.
Key Findings:
- Rainfall Anomalies: Several stations like Uusgure, Garowe, and Las’anod received over 100mm of rain, but coastal and Deex zones remained critically dry.
- Drought Severity: The Combined Drought Index (CDI) shows extreme drought in Sanaag and Bari, demanding urgent humanitarian interventions.
- Pasture Decline: MODIS-based data confirms deteriorating pasture conditions in many areas, pushing pastoralists to migrate toward better-off regions like Buuhoodle.
- Consequences: Risk of crop failure, water scarcity, and livestock stress continues to rise.
Recommendations:
- Government and partners should expand emergency measures such as water trucking and fodder aid.
- Continued monitoring and updates will be issued monthly by IMC.
